about

The Sound Of Waking

The human mind reacts to sounds by reaching for memories, pulling them out to help identify what is heard. The beauty of In The Waking Hour is, that our memories frequently fool us. In the midst of listening, you might find yourself asking, “Who is making that sound?” The music here often blends together, leaving the sounds unidentifiable as to their maker. Is it percussion? Is it voice? Is it bass or electronics? Similarly, you may find yourself trying to decide if a sound is acoustic or electric in nature.

Joni, Barry, and Michael demonstrate a great degree of empathy for each other, and for each other’s sounds. It’s difficult to imagine that this recording is the first time they ever played together. But they are all seasoned improvisation veterans, having played, and crossed paths at, various monthly events in the Milwaukee music scene. The best music is multi-layered and tends to reveal more upon repeated listening. In The Waking Hour reveals something new each time you play it.
