about

This recording comes from my archives and is an unreleased 5-CD box set to commemorate the 20th Anniversary of my first solo percussion recording from 2002, STARS SHOW THE WAY. I tend to be organized and know what I want to accomplish when I go into the recording studio, thus there are no extra tracks or 2nd takes of the music from STARS to feature. But I went through my archives and found 2 pre-STARS live recordings: one a performance/clinic I presented, and the other a live recording of the same material. These are embryonic in some ways, but also fully formed in others. I had a concept in my mind of the music I wanted to create and started playing it. But none of my compositions are ever final and tend to evolve over time. As I acquire new ideas and new instruments, I incorporate them into the existing music, keeping them alive and fresh.

The other 2 recordings are new and based upon the music and ideas of STARS, a sort of homage to the music that got me started.

The 1st recording is, ALL ACCESS PASS, a performance & clinic from 2001, where I also talk about the compositions I'm playing. Recorded live at a music store, it features versions of the music that would become the STARS SHOW THE WAY CD. This is the earliest recording of my solo percussion music. I toured these pieces up until around 2007 and still revisit some of them today.

The 2nd recording is, LIVE STUDIO, that was recorded in the same music store the next day without an audience and features most of the same music, plus one additional track. This was taken from a damaged DAT tape and some of the tracks contain digital artifacts. Care was taken to clean up and repair the music as much as possible. I felt that the historical importance of these being the 1st studio recordings of this music was important enough to release them.

The 3rd recording is a new recording, REFRACTION OF STARS. This is music composed and improvised in the same spirit as the original STARS album. This contains new versions of both ‘Showers of Spectral Light’ (from the LABYRINTH album) and ’Stars Show The Way’, as well as a series of ’Small Gestures’ based on my interest in Alchemy.

The 4th recording is, SKY THROUGH TREES. This is song cycle of improvisations that reflect my mindset in the bleak winter hours of February & March, 2022. This was inspired by listening to the original STARS album.

The 5th recording is STARS SHOW THE WAY, which you can find here on my Bandcamp page. This album was the culmination of many years of wanting to play and present my own percussion music to people.

All the music here was played and recorded LIVE to 2-tracks. There are no overdubs or sonic manipulations. What I played is what you hear. Even after 20 years I’m still at it, still exploring the far edges of sound and percussion. It is a never ending process. Thank you for listening!
